Generic Name: Famotidine
Pepcid Uses
Pepcid is effective in promoting the healing of stomach and duodenal ulcerations and decreasing ulcer pain. Pepcid is also taken to deal with heartburn and to cure ulcers and inflammation of the esophagus (esophagitis) caused by acid (gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD).
How Taken
For adults it is recommended to take 40 mg once a day orally at bedtime, or 20 mg twice a day (to treat duodenal ulcers). Most people have their ulcers healed in 4 weeks. The maintenance therapy after the healing of ulcerations is 20 mg daily at bedtime. To treat gastric ulcer you are recommended to take 40 mg once a day at bedtime, and for esophagitis you should take pepcid in doses of 20-40 mg twice a day for 6-12 weeks. Zollinger-Ellison syndrome is healed with 20 mg each 6 hours. To treat heartburn due to GERD take 10-20 mg daily.
Drug Class and Mechanism
Pepcid is one of the drugs called H2-blockers which block the action of histamine on stomach cells, thus reducing production of acid by the stomach. Other medications of this class include cimetidine (Tagamet), ranitidine (Zantac), and nizatidine (Axid).
